8. Because they had a ton of corn, and figured out how to make 'sugar' with it.

It was the best think since sliced bread, and quickly became a common ingredient in food products. No testing was ever done to determine if it may actually cause health issues. No one was thinking such things back then.

I don't think it was done with knowledge that it would be harmful. It was all about being cheap and making money.
