2. I celebrated New Year's Eve at Phantom Ranch...

... 40 years ago, after spending the previous week hiking along the Kaibab to catch the Bright Angel trail down to the foot bridge. Anyone that would defile the Grand Canyon with strip malls or uranium mines deserves to take the two-minute express route to the bottom.
