Staff reports
A woman who nearly died last month and was the second pregnant patient in the country to receive a life-saving medical device gave birth Tuesday in Omaha.
Seven weeks before her due date, on Jan. 9, the young woman felt chest pain, dizziness and a rapid heart rate and then collapsed on the bathroom floor. Her family frantically called 911. Six minutes later, paramedic Dylan LaMontia knelt over her and reported: No pulse!
Anai "Anna" Cardenas was 32 weeks pregnant. Paramedics from Fremont revived the expecting mother, and a helicopter then transported her from the Fremont Area Medical Center to the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.
There, she became only the second pregnant patient in the U.S. to receive a new kind of defibrillator called the S-ICD.
