(8,556 posts)I assumed the mean age here was over 40, but it looks to be closer to 50, maybe even higher. It's noticeable too, especially in 'nostalgia' threads and also when posters write about personal experiences and reminisces.
I wonder what accounts for it? I would guess many things, but a big one is probably the political nature of the board. Younger people seem less likely to be registered to vote and to follow politics closely. Today's teens and 20-somethings are probably too busy with sites like reddit and the failblog to spend too much time posting about politics.
I also wonder if it has something to do with the liberal activism in the 60s-70s. Old habits die hard and not everyone was 'mugged by reality,' as it were
. You also those who converted to liberalism later in life and have a lot of pent up liberalism they want to express. My grandfather was such a person.
Not sure how this fits in, but I noticed the other day that the 10 youngest House members are all Republicans. I don't think it means Generation Y is becoming more Republican - the opposite is true. Probably it's mostly a product of recent Republican gains in the house, which skews the newbies in their direction. Still, I did think of it after seeing this poll.
