Mike Beebe, who was instrumental in expanding Medicaid in the state, could not run for a 3rd term due to term limits (that were put in place after Bill Clinton's 12-year tenure). He most likely would have been re-elected if he could have run. At any rate, last year, the Democrats fielded a weak candidate to replace him, and they made sure he wasn't challenged in the primary. On top of that, one of the Democrats' main issues, raising the minimum wage, was taken away from them when it was introduced as a separate ballot initiative. So the Democrats ended up faring miserably in the election.
