Wall street knows how to hide it's shit well, and many everyday investors didn't realize their exposure to the housing collapse (for example) until after they looked at their statements. In 2008, I had a friend say to me something along the lines of, "I don't understand what happened, I don't invest in high risk mortgages, just mutual funds".
