In reply to the discussion: As I watch President Obama walk down the airstairs from AF1 in Alabama... [View all]freshwest
(53,661 posts)56. FDR said similar things:
Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting.
~ Franklin D. Roosevelt
A Democratic majority would not have gone the route that the GOP has. The smears against the Democrats for wanting voting to be easier and more inclusive shows the GOP despises our people and democracy. It's their philosophy.
For them, government should be the agent of the few, and most of all, they resist government that will rule them. They feel they are entitled to make all the rules.
Anything else is tyranny!
Let us not be afraid to help each other - let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a President and Senators and
Congressmen and Government officials but the voters of this country.
~ Franklin D. Roosevelt
This is the reason there is so much disinformation and outrage peddled to get people to quit voting. But the same voices still encourage rightwingers to vote, why is that?
Because they get what they want from both kinds of voters, using different methods. For Democrats only, they employ what has been called Dirty Tricks.
A form of that has been used since the start of the USA when it was called slander, but not with the money and methodical nature it has been since Tricky Dick. Plus they have the media to drive in their deceptions, and create an echo people often repeat with no clue of the purpose behind the words.
I've been asked to make an OP about the method, which if one knows the authors of it, can easily be found out.
It has been used to drive Democratic voters from the polls for 40 years.

Yep - goose bump moments. Good stuff. We are evolving. Painfully slowly, but it's progress.

Absolutely Pres. Obama's best speech of all. A rhetorical masterpiece for the ages.
