50. Back in the '60s, there were several respectable Republicans

Everett Dirksen, for example, Senator from Illinois who, for all his other faults (for example, he was a war hawk) helped Lyndon Johnson pass the Civil Rights Act. Then there was Winthrop Rockefeller, Governor of Arkansas (1967-71) who helped change the image of the state from a land of hillbillies and racists to one of a more progressive and tolerant people. And his brother Nelson, Governor of New York, would fit in the center or even left of today's Democratic Party.

But as you said, "Today the most public members are re-election machines that care nothing of governance and policy understand goes Heritage Foundation cover letter deep." I think that crap started going full-throttle with the election of Reagan in 1980.
