(27,247 posts)Everett Dirksen, for example, Senator from Illinois who, for all his other faults (for example, he was a war hawk) helped Lyndon Johnson pass the Civil Rights Act. Then there was Winthrop Rockefeller, Governor of Arkansas (1967-71) who helped change the image of the state from a land of hillbillies and racists to one of a more progressive and tolerant people. And his brother Nelson, Governor of New York, would fit in the center or even left of today's Democratic Party.
