Showing Original Post only (View all)Why White People Freak Out When They're Called Out About Race [View all]
http://www.alternet.org/culture/why-white-people-freak-out-when-theyre-called-out-about-raceI can only paste four paragraphs so here they are, but I encourage people to read the whole thing:
SAB: What causes white fragility to set in?
RD: For white people, their identities rest on the idea of racism as about good or bad people, about moral or immoral singular acts, and if were good, moral people we cant be racist we dont engage in those acts. This is one of the most effective adaptations of racism over timethat we can think of racism as only something that individuals either are or are not doing.
In large part, white fragilitythe defensiveness, the fear of conflictis rooted in this good/bad binary. If you call someone out, they think to themselves, What you just said was that I am a bad person, and that is intolerable to me. Its a deep challenge to the core of our identity as good, moral people.
The good/bad binary is also what leads to the very unhelpful phenomenon of un-friending on Facebook.

So you think the reason some groups are more successful than others, is due to simple superiority?

I think it's largely a matter of being born on second and thinking they hit a double.

So you don't believe that being white confers *any* advantages? Or being male? Or being hetero? n/t

Okay, but you were seemingly dismissing race, gender, and sexuality, as if class were all that
