(11,833 posts)On some issues. It's probably exactly the same on others. I guess all of mine are very subjective, for me alone. The race issue is one that touches me very deeply. Perhaps because I moved around a lot as a child and know what it's like feeling lonely and outcast and know that love and welcoming and acceptance is a primary necessity in life. Unless and until you have that, it's impossible to even get out of bed. When you have it, it's like fresh water or air, it sustains you enough to go out and do everything else. In my life I have found it often with so many different types of people that I love them dearly.
I think extremism often helps the activist left. In fact I kind of thought that's what it's made of. Extremism for peace. Extremism for workers' rights. Extremism for women's rights. Extremism for gay, lesbian, transgender rights. Extremism for people of color. Those extremists from yesterday, who were slandered and humiliated and outcast are our heroes today.
It's 2015. You can't get away with telling other people their experiences are not valid. You can't lecture to someone else about what is racist or sexist and what is not, and not expect blowback from people who have lived it, felt it, not only in their history but in their daily lives.
By the way, I'm not sure who you think is extremist here at DU. The folks I like I consider friendly and funny and warm and kind. I don't consider them extremist. Extremists I feel aren't here talking on this message board. They are somewhere else being extremist, lol.
Either the current activist left learns to listen and get along with and benefit from different voices and not patronizing toward all different types of people now, or the current activist left will sink like a stone. How many do we have currently in Congress? Five or ten? How many does the Tea Party currently have in Congress? Around a hundred?
We need to step up our game. We only do that by being as inclusive as possible. We'll all benefit. Besides, I have more in common with people who might like similar music or similar likes than I might with people who have similar grudges or sex or skin color. It's a very mixed bag.
Please don't get me wrong. I think there's room here for all here. I think we need it. I think it's necessary for us to build and grow. Something that may piss me off today, the next day I may laugh my ass off about it. I'm confident that I'd enjoy the personal company of pretty much everyone who posts here. I just wish that could be expressed here through language. It's often a poor substitute for real meetings offline. But since we're all in our separate areas, I guess we must do the best we can.
