(11,833 posts)I haven't seen any posts here that say 'all white people are racist.' So I think you are projecting something that's not there. I will say though that I'm a bit surprised by how difficult it is for a lot of white people here to talk about or just listen to discussions involving race, without reacting hysterically or defensively, or projecting a lot of weird stuff that has next to nothing to do with those particular issues. To me it's like if I say 'Ow. My toe hurts!' and fifty people jump in to reply 'Are you calling me a racist?' I mean, wtf?
Second, that whole other people are saying this to me and vice versa thing doesn't score any points with me because they are complaining to you about stuff they are too insecure or afraid of saying here online. Probably for a reason. They know it wouldn't fly at a site with a lot of liberals posting here, some from cities, some from urban areas, some from rural areas. But if you can't say it here publicly then there's really no way to respond to it. Other than to say I suspect it's white people whining that 'Oh, I can't talk with those black folks about race because I'm afraid I'll get called a racist.'
Speaking just for myself, I think that it's possible for someone to post something here and have someone reply 'that's racist' and then move on. That doesn't mean the person is saying you're klan member. And that doesn't mean they should be banished from ever posting here again. It doesn't even mean the person saying 'that's racist' is saying 'you are a bona fide racist.' It means just what it says. 'That's racist.' Or, based on my experience and mine alone I think that's racist. I think we're never going to have a good dialogue about race in this country until white people get over that fear and start openly talking about it with black people. And yes, I think that's a white person's problem. Not a black person's problem.
Just as I feel a lot of sexism is a male problem. And a lot of prejudice against gay people is not a problem of gay people as much as it is a problem of bullies. And maybe of people who fear they are gay. Or something. And a lot of discrimination toward others is a problem of the discriminator, not the discriminatee (who is often just trying to be heard in the first place, and not have a bunch of crazy ass shit projected onto them, either publicly on a message board or in cowardly whining behind their back).
