(854 posts)This is one of the oldest tricks in the book: if you wish to discredit an idea or a movement, find a follower or believer in that idea who also behaves in a way (or has other ideas) that many people might find offensive, ridiculous or stupid. You then attack that person as the representative of that movement. It is easy and quite effective. Most Americans (and apparently a high percentage of DUers) are not intelligent enough to separate the idea from the individual who has espoused it publicly. It is also connected to the widespread popularity of authoritarian belief systems, where we identify ideas with political leaders, celebrities and other public figures and allow that to become a type of worship. It's as common on this website as it is anywhere else in the US.
"Oh, you think the police are out of control and they way they interact with the pubic needs revision? Well, Al Sharpton thinks that way too, and he's a liar and fraud! He owes millions in back taxes, you know!"
"Al Gore believes in global warming -- and he has an expensive, wasteful home that uses a lot of electricity! How can you believe in global climate change just like that scumbag?"
