Some people are willing to 'take one for the team' when they agree with the team on just about everything else.

You see the same thing on the other side. Lots of Dems strongly disagree with certain aspects of the party platform, but nonetheless agree with enough of the rest of it to stay in the fold.

You also see it with other Republican groups. There are plenty of conservatives who can't stand the Falwell/Robertson crowd, but would rather tolerate them than go to the other side.
