(60,997 posts)I never liked the idea that you should hope the opponents pick the least acceptable candidate.
I suspect that it would take the Republicans sticking to the legally sane ones AND the response to whether the country is headed in the right direction going way below 50% -- assuming (as I do) that the Democratic candidate preforms reasonably. (I like the current direction of the trend - 53 for very well and fairly well is a good sign and (even without plotting them) you can see the trend is that it is going up.) I have followed this series, which at times has been disheartening -- but if this keeps up - it's good for us. http://pollingreport.com/right.htm (For comparison, look at what McCain was fighting - with the Republicans holding the WH, it was 16 immediately before the election. (Note there is a poll below the top one by Gallup that asks the question differently - as satisfied, dissatisfied that has very different results - but we are about the same as when Obama won in 2012 -- still way above 2008, but bizarrely lower than 2004.
Hillary (or any other Democrat) will be in far better shape if the economy and foreign policy are seen as going in the right direction.
