(14,693 posts)I haven't seen the photo, but if people are finding it eerily familiar... perhaps that's because it's a fairly common thing in sales imagery.
I'm remembering this as a common meme in advertising, from classes I took long ago...
In a lot of ads, you'll have a situation where a woman and man are embracing/kissing/whatever, but the woman's attention is on YOU the viewer, as if to say, "I might be here with him, but I really want YOU." This is not surprising in a male-dominated society that advertisers would try to draw men in by subtly raising their subconscious expectations that using the advertised product will help them "get the girl."
In reverse, where the man is engaged with the woman while looking at the camera -- or, more often it seems, cooly receiving attention from the woman while not himself participating (i.e. strong, silent type) -- the message would be the same, only directed at female viewers: "She means nothing to me. If you were here, you could feel my pecs."
Just another manifestation of the old adage, "sex sells."
So... Maybe Cruz was hoping for a "Hey, girl" kind of moment?
