The implication was that a hyper-conservative, outwardly homophobic Republican might be hypocritically hiding his own orientation.

I have no idea if that is true of Cruz, and it doesn't particularly interest me, but there is no honest way to interpret it as being a homophobic slur, at all.

People here, on this "progressive board," regularly speculate on the possibility of homophobic politicians hiding their own orientations, specifically in order to succeed among their gay-bashing brethren. It is a reasonable, pro-gay acceptance thing to point out, and no one anywhere sincerely believes otherwise. It also of course not unknown at all for virulently homophobic leaders, and virulent homophobes in general, to be unhappily closeted people.

Pretty obvious attempt here at manufacturing logic in order to hide the comment of a poster everyone knows quite well is not homophobic, and was not implying anything even slightly homophobic in the post.
