(82,849 posts)We walked through the whole idea that going out to eat at a restaurant probably shouldn't be a life or death decision. Then we walked through the reasons why it probably wasn't a good idea to let restaurants police themselves. Then we walked through the idea of public health, and the inevitable lag between when the first patron would be poisoned and when the free market would finally shut the restaurant down (if it did). Then we walked through the non-public part of the civil lawsuit process, and how so many settlements require non-disclosure by the parties. Then we walked through the likelihood of serial offenders simply closing a restaurant in the southeast part of town only to open another ptomaine emporium in the northwest part of town the next week.
It was exhausting, and as I said, the lesson didn't take, but it was enough for me at the time.
