In reply to the discussion: Congratulations, Mr. President [View all]ieoeja
(9,748 posts)29. In a nutshell:
I've heard cheering, but no details.
1. Iran destroys all weapons grade nuclear capabilities.
2. Iran permits international inspects unfettered access. No country has ever gone that far before.
3. World lifts economic sanctions after inspectors verify that Iran has met their end of the bargain.
4. Sanctions remain lifted as long as inspections continue.
I've heard booing by Republicans, but no details.
1. Iran is not privatizing their oil fields.
I am sure you noticed that not one Republican complaining about the deal has mentioned exactly what we did not get. It is a good bet you never will. They are not likely to tell you:
a. with Iran's nuclear program shut down, we no longer have a valid excuse for economic sanctions, and
b. without sanctions we have no leverage for forcing Iran to hand over their oil fields to Exxon and Shell, therefore
c. this deal is bad because we wanted that oil!
Fuck the nukes. We always knew Iran wouldn't be stupid enough to do anything with nukes. But Obama just surrendered our leverage for getting their oil for Exxon and Shell.
