(18,318 posts)In many areas, even a threatened species can over populate and wreak havoc on the land and thereby, other flora and fauna. In the U. S., trophy hunting plays a role in ecological balance. And this stuff about children killing something to watch it die is often a child acting out a hunting instinct. A lot of kids pop a bird with a BB gun, and regret it later when they see it does not fit in with killing to survive (something we All do, one way or another). I would certainly not want you to be in charge of determining the mental health of children.
Note also, that a "trophy" animal is usually at the end of its reproductive life, having spread its genetics throughout its range. It either dies of old age, or is taken down by a predator (man is but one). Either way, it consumes and over-uses the countryside.
Anyone who poaches should be brought to the bar, but eliminating the practice ( which you don't define) merely puts fewer eyes in the field to spot the murderous, armed bandits who are not so squeamish about the subject.
