(9,090 posts)we could be rid of that rw radio monopoly and a lot of those limbaugh stations, and make a lot available for liberal talkers if college students and faculty and employees around the country would stop allowing their schools to support/endorse it.
90 major universities (at least) rent their mascots to more than 267 limbaugh stations in one of the most self-destructive shoot-yourself-in-the-foot business relationships in history. the radio portion is a very small portion of the overall sports broadcasting media revenues but it means a lot to those stations and limbaugh overall to be able to put those logos all over those ALEC/GOP/koch bros hate mongering lying soapboxes. it brings them community and state credibility and lots of ad revenue.
those relationships are completely antithetical to the goals stated in most college mission statements.
in wisconsin for instance, the university of wisconsin badgers are bringing big bucks to those two limbaugh radio stations that scott walker has been using successfully since he started terrorizing WIS.
all it would take is a few major unis declaring they won't renew those contracts with that licensing company unless they exclude political talk radio. others would be shamed into following. most stations would have to change format, offer balance, or lose a lot of business. that would open up a lot of opportunities for the liberal talkers, previously excluded by the rw's monopoly power, and i'd bet if even just 20% of talk radio was liberal (as opposed to 5%) it would make a huge difference in US politics. as it is now the rw gets a free speech free ride.
from republicanradio.org:
The urgency of climate change makes it imperative for those schools to take their mission statements seriously and find apolitical alternatives for broadcasting sports.
For 25 years talk radio has played a significant part in enabling denial by politicians and delaying US action to reduce carbon emissions. Rush Limbaugh and other talkers had a major role in selling the East Anglia email hoax that climate scientist Michael Mann says may have delayed climate action for years.
Republican radio stations:
push for deregulation and continued subsidization of fossil fuels, including by fracking
promote Republican candidates who will increase fossil fuel dependency
broadcast guest climate and energy experts from think tanks funded by the fossil fuel industry
attack advocates and legislation that promote solutions
intimidate scientists, politicians, and media
Most of the programming on Republican radio stations is inconsistent with the stated goals of our institutions of higher learning and the interests of their students.
Republican radio stations are also used to:
attack science and scientists that interfere with corporate deregulation
influence elections for university regents and choices for university presidents
attack teachers
promote strategies used to defund and privatize public education, reduce teacher salaries and benefits, and destroy teacher unions
oppose legislation and tax reform that would lower tuition rates
make student voting harder
use hate, bigotry, and disinformation to divide communities, elect Republicans, and sell the Republican agenda
Radio licensing revenue is a minor part of overall sports licensing revenues. In 2013/14, a radio station will pay $1500 to Westwood One/Dial Global for a championship NCAA basketball game. How much of that goes to the university? Details of licensing agreements between state funded schools and licensing companies are usually kept confidential, even from school administration.
Our schools need to rework their licensing contracts. If there is a penalty, perhaps donors can be found to make up the difference.
