the over the top types are becoming the new normal in the GOP. Plus their rhetoric, extreme as it is, masks the nearly as extreme rhetoric by GOP mainstream types like Ted Cruz and Rand Paul and makes the latter two seem more moderate.
And they do have influence, as witnessed by the constant flow of new restrictions on abortion, RU486, and other health issues.
