(60,869 posts)a treaty. That would take 67 votes. They BARELY got 67 votes for the START treaty with Kerry and Lugar, both sane and committed to it, running the SFRC. It was also a continuation of START which was started under Reagan -- and it was the lame duck session of 2010 when we still had 59 Democrats.
Someone up thread had it right - if they reach an agreement, Obama should sign it as he legally can.
Shumer may have had a perfect SAT, but he is really not considering the real possibilities here. If the bill fails - because the US Congress kills it, the likelihood is most of the world with lift the sanctions. The US can't control other countries.
This deal has a potential - just a potential for resetting US foreign policy is a better - ie not neo con - direction.
