There has never been large progressive majorities in Congress, yet progressive presidents have managed to get their agendas passed. How? By getting dirty, fighting in the fray, not staying out of it, not trying to be "bipartisan". LBJ would target recalcitrant Dems who were blocking his agenda, go into their districts and campaign against them until they saw the error of their ways and got behind his agenda.
Frankly I'm sick of these endless excuses about Obama's performance. The fact of the matter is that when Obama came into office he had a ton of political capital, a mandate for change, and through his inexperience and naivete he squandered it all. That isn't the fault of we the people, that isn't the fault of Blue Dogs, that is the fault of Obama and his advisers.
