GoFundMe Tells Supporters Of Accused Killer Cop To Go Away
The fundraising website GoFundMe has taken down a campaign aimed at raising funds for Michael Slager, the South Carolina policeman who was recorded shooting an unarmed black man.
The crowd-funding website GoFundMe is not available for supporters of former North Charleston, South Carolina police officer Michael Slager.
Kelsea Little, public relations manager for GoFundMe confirmed that administrators have permanently removed a campaign attempting to raise money for Slager's defense. Officer Michael Slager, 33, has been charged with the murder after a video was made public, showing the former police officer shooting 50-year-old Walter Scott (photo left) multiple times in the back as Scott tried to flee.
"After review by our team, the campaign set up for Officer Slager was removed from GoFundMe due to a violation of our Terms and Conditions," Ms. Little told ThinkProgress via email.
Ms. Little declined to discuss the manner in which the campaign ran afoul of the site rules due to privacy protections. She told reporters GoFundMe can only discuss the details of campaigns with the organizers," but the owner of this @DefendMichaelS Twitter account set up to raise funds for Slager seems to suggest GoFundMe has not given the campaign a firm reason for the refusal, tweeting:
"...they would not give me any reason for removing my campaign, now I know the real reason, Cowardice!"
Meanwhile, supporters of Michael Slager, who say he is innocent until proven guilty and deserves a defense, have found a new domain for their fundraising efforts:
As of this noon today, the page had raised $393.00
