The store forces its employees to ask for donations, then the store gets recognition for the compiled donations. Much like companies are recognized for contributions to United Way, etc.

I support local charities. In my own case that is almost always an animal welfare organization. I give to those organizations that I am familiar with and know that they use the money for the desired purpose - not for some CEO to be able to go on television and talk about how much money was raised for charity, etc.
