employed some absurd crash diet that isn't sustainable, and isn't meant to be. They reach their goal and go back to eating and living the only other way they know, which, unsurprisingly, takes them right back to where they were before the diet.

If you lose weight by changing your habits, and just slowly switch over to a healthy lifestyle you can maintain for good, you'll keep the weight off permanently.
