18. Martin Sheen and the late Paul Newman

Like most of the others named, they didn't quit their day jobs but were progressive activists while pursuing their entertainment careers. Newman was on Nixon's enemies list early on.

I met Sheen while volunteering on a homeless project in D.C. with the late Mitch Snyder a long time ago (Sheen was a big supporter of Snyder and D.C.'s Community for Creative Non-Violence) and met Newman while volunteering for Kerry in Ohio (Newman was a 'Veteran for Kerry' in the '04 campaign).

Oops, left out Ed Asner, who is still active. Naturally, I met him, too, lol! At an antiwar protest in the San Fernando Valley.
