(3,891 posts)Then, as many local stories do, it went national, and then international. The local station, KETV has video, and the report. I posted the link to KETV, which is an ABC news affiliate. Not normally listed as a RW site. Daily Mail picked it up, as did CNN.

Now, you may not think it's a legitimate news story. But it happened. It is a horrible optic to be caught in. My wife, who is handicapped, not that it matters, was not amused to say the least. Bad optics stick with people, and politicians. Look at the ESPN reporter who is now suspended after a rant. Bad optics in the age of the internet stick with you for a very long time. This will come up whenever the Scooby Doo van appears for some time.
The way Democrats win, is when we are smart, and we campaign on issues, and we communicate those issues to the voters. Bad optics hurt those campaigns, because they draw away from the issues, and make it a question of entitled mentality. Hillary has enough baggage on that front already. Her vote for Bankruptcy reform that screwed the average citizen and protected the corporations ability to write off debt is but one example of the entitlement mentality that I mentioned.
The way you learn from your mistakes, is to admit you made a mistake, and take efforts to avoid repeating the mistake. This way, you avoid the mistake. You can bet that every photographer, and every videographer is going to be hustling to try and catch the van parked in another Handicap spot. If we don't learn from the mistake, it will happen again.
This is not RW water. This is what is happening. Simply denouncing it as RW water carrying doesn't help the Democratic Party at all. It makes us look like a bunch of lunatics. I've been a member of the ACLU for more than twenty years. I warned people that the Senate was in jeopardy in 2014, months ahead of time, and was told to shut the hell up. Don't worry I was told, the Democrats are going to win big because the Republicans have low favorables. What nobody was talking about was the Democratic Party favorables were only a few points higher. So we sucked, but they sucked worse.
I want to see a Democrat in the White House. I want to see the Democrats take the Senate. But we're not going to do that if we ignore things that are going to hurt us. Party line bullshit didn't help one damn bit in 2014. It cost us four million votes in 2012, and will lose us the election in 2016.
Pretending that the story isn't news is like putting your fingers in your ears and going I can't hear you la-la-la. It doesn't change facts, and it doesn't change the truth of the horrible optics. Right now, the mainstream media is showing that video from KETV to everyone they can. We can learn, apologize, and say we're taking efforts to keep from doing it again. Or we can shout it's all a trick and a bullshit story with photoshop or other nonsense. Dealing in reality is supposed to be a virtue of the Democratic Party. From Climate Change to economic theory and beyond.
It happened. Deal with it. Don't pretend that by sticking your fingers in your ears that it didn't. That won't win the election, that attitude guarantees that the Republicans get the Trifecta. House, Senate, and Oval Office.
