(16,698 posts)Presidential candidates, and all candidates, regularly say things they have no intention of actually doing, or even supporting. They say and do things expecting to be misunderstood, and then parsing later. Saying "the era of big government is over" AFTER you're elected can't be blamed on filibusters. It something specifically avoided during a campaign. Saying you'll renegotiate NAFTA when you have no intention of renegotiating NAFTA and in fact plan on negotiating ANOTHER NAFTA isn't because of the GOP or changing circumstances. I love it when they claim to not have campaigned on a Public Option, much less forget that they stood in front of the world and said it was necessary to keep the insurance companies "honest".
Yes, I'll be suspicious of anything candidates say, especially ones with a history of triangulation.
