I agree 100%. That is an all too common feature of our culture. There is a shallowness, that renders far too many discussions of "politics" to the near-meaningless level of, "Nice weather!" followed by, "Sure is! Have a nice day."

In my opinion, that's not the result of people being either ignorant or stupid. It is that our culture depends upon that degree of shallowness, to keep people from two things: thinking and feeling.
