(1,980 posts)There's a disconnect between the national parties and the American people. When a problem arises, we get a lot of hand-waving and platitudes from the elected class, their patrons, and the minions in the think thanks, but we don't ever get something concrete. Persistent unemployment? Mumble something about worker retraining or evil regulations (depending on your "official" political slant) and yammer on about greatest something or other. The NSA clearly exceeding constitutionally permissible surveillance (which is really defined by the attitude of the population, not nine morons in cheap robes)? Invoke the terrorists, mumble about freedom, and then lie through your teeth about your proposed "fixes." These are reasons why Rand has a chance.
Rand relies on most people not having the time or energy to figure out that he's full of it. I remember his supposed fourth amendment bill from a couple of years ago and that was a masterpiece of deception if you don't understand the basics of how courts work. In short, Rand named his bill something like "Fourth Amendment Restoration Act" and claimed it would prevent the federal government from spying on Americans. It did no such thing. It told the federal courts how they were to interpret the law, which never works. Rand either had complete idiots working in his office, which is possible, or he's a completely cynical bastard who put up a law he knew would never pass constitutional muster. Congress can make the law, define the law, and set its jurisdiction, but it can't tell the court how to interpret the law. He had to know that if it passed, it'd be overturned. I imagine the plan in that case would be to crow about how the courts are against freedumb and how only good, old Rand is for it. That's the kind of scumbag we see in old Rand.
