In some places this effectively exiles sex offenders from the community, since many cannot afford homes in the suburban sprawl where there is enough distance between housing and places like schools, etc.

Try bringing up sex offenders next time you're around a conservative Christian. You will find that their attitudes towards them are usually very harsh. It also usually fits in with their homophobia and disdain for liberals, since many equate homosexuality and pedophilia and believe that permissive liberal culture encourages sexual deviance.
