(765 posts)in politics. Purists forget that to our party's detriment. That's the reason I could never fully adore Ted Kennedy. He railed against Jimmy Carter not being liberal enough and tried to primary a sitting president. He had a hand in giving us Ronald Reagan as a result of his idealism. He also killed Carter's healthcare reform because it wasn't liberal enough. That hurt a lot of people, set us back 30 years, and ultimately killed many who died without access to adequate health care.
Idealism has its place, but it isn't in politics. On the other side of the aisle, we see the purists doing the same thing; shutting down government, insisting on their way or the highway, turning Americans against them because they insist on purity over politics. Politics is dirty, and the best that you can hope for is a good compromise most of the time. It's not for the purist, that's for sure.
