That's how it sounds to people who aren't in the cult. It's an expression of selfless devotion to someone who doesn't even know your name. It sounds servile and pitiful and utterly irrational-- and sad.

It's not, as you've suggested, simply a reference to defending those around you. This is a politician promoting policy-- not a toddler wandering into traffic.
