Mayweather/Pacquiao is the biggest fight in years and it's one that pretty much everyone who follows boxing has been wanting to happen. I'm not sure why you think this in particular says anything terrible about the USA's priorities. Professional football is much more popular, it's on network television, and statistically, pro football players have a higher risk of long-term brain damage from football (a pro player is in 16 games a year, more if they play in the post-season, with dozens of plays a game; a professional boxer may have 40 or 50 fights in a career).
