(19,497 posts)It sounds scary but it comes down to being the kind of person who stands up for myself and my neighbors or promoting a system steeped in violence, wars, industrialized prisons, corruption, graft, rent-seeking, political patronage, poverty, etc. etc. etc.
The devil is in the details, naturally; but at the end of the day the equation always comes down to: What kind of person am I?
Some will point to the dangers of lynch mobs but, again: What kind of person am I? Having a police force and a state that first seeks its own safety over that of the citizenry it is charged to protect will not make me a better person.
Once the state becomes institutional it ceases to protect the people and protects the systems of its own power over all else. In fact, the instant the people decide the state has become a bigger threat than a protector the state proves them right by using its authority and resources -- all granted by the people through their labor -- to suppress the will of the people. All states are parasites that inevitably turn on their hosts.
Moreover, many who do seek to harm their neighbors make themselves a part of the state because it grants them the resources, opportunity and immunity to affect their desires. The only stupid criminals are those who don't attend the academy or gain elected office.
