(36,418 posts)where it occurs. Think about the urban riots of the 1960s. In the short run they gutted predominantly-Black inner-city neighborhoods in dozens of US cities. They also gave credibility to the threat that if nothing were done about the problems that sparked these uprisings, the insurrection might spread and turn into a broader civil insurrection.
In most cases the immediate cause that sparked local rioting was excessive police force, while the bigger issues were racial discrimination, disproportionate rates of minority unemployment, and poverty. There has been some progress on some of this, while other problems -- the spark -- hasn't changed one it - police violence against Blacks seems to have actually worsened today.
Something finally has to be done about the police.
