In reply to the discussion: PETA slams Al Gore for ‘hypocrisy and sheer laziness’ for not limiting Live Earth festival food to v [View all]free range means free range - no grain, little supplemental feed at all. confined feeding is 100% crops. water consumption for crops is the major usage, all cattle drink about the same - the main variability is weather/temperature not EXERCISE.
raising (and eating) beef can be an extremely sustainable and environmentally ENHANCING process. I am not saying it all is by any means, but cattle natually consume lower on the food chain than other meats and can convert undigestible-by-humans plant matter from land that is NOT arable or productive for food in any other way. Managed correctly they can enhance biodiversity, nutrient cycles, ground cover, mitigate erosion, help sequester C02, AND provide delicious high quality nutritious protein (and other useful products).
