U.S. disaster zone experts touched down in Kathmandu on Tuesday to help relief efforts following Nepal's catastrophic earthquake.

The team of around 60 men and women from Virginia's Fairfax County Urban Search and Rescue — along with specialist sniffer dogs — were greeted on the runway of Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport by U.S. ambassador Peter W. Bodde upon arrival at around 11:30 a.m. local time (1:45a.m. ET).

Bodde told NBC News they were "very fortunate because they had been working with the government of Nepal for the last two years on disaster preparedness.

The Fairfax team — which will be searching for survivors and assisting in the massive humanitarian effort in Nepal — are equipped with enough gear for 14 days.
