...the actions are defensible because of the environment that Graham and her family are challenged to live and survive in; not because of some generational acceptance of blacks of harsh punishment. What I witnessed wasn't 'discipline,' as much as it was reaction and an attempt to remove her son from the very dangerous situation he'd placed himself in; evidently, in defiance of her best efforts as a mother. Either she removes him from that situation with whatever means she can manage, or the admittedly abusive police force is free to use their own brand of brutality, indifferent to the needs of this young individual.

One important effect of the media highlight has been an affirmation and reminder for families to keep a tighter rein on the activities and location of their children in these problem areas of the community. I'm certain that was the subject in many homes in that community that evening.
