"They could talk about the way their policy interventions will allow those who receive them to become better people and how those of us who support them will better ourselves as we reach out in love. They could describe health care reform as a response to suffering".

But I'm not sure that we need to help people to make them better people and to make ourselves feel better.

We help others because we can and we should.

That's true compassion.

ETA: Didn't Jesus say "judge not lest ye be judged" and "what you do for the least of these, you do for me"...? That seems pretty clear.
