(62,325 posts)23. What's amazing is how quickly those in power moved to try to shut them down. Initially OWS was only
supposed to protest in one city, NYC, and only for at most, about a week if they could last that long.
What galvanized the movement was the attacks by the NYPD on peaceful protesters and even observers. That brought out the crowdes and it spread rapidly across the country.
Actually OWS was based on other such protests, in Spain eg, after people realized that one day protests had not accomplished much of anything, no matter how big they were, the Anti War protests, eg. After a day of protesting, with no coverage by the media, they went home, and were dismissed.
So two groups decided to remain on the streets rather than go home. OWS was the most successful, and in large part, thanks to the NYPD.
