(40,416 posts)It won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1969, and was also nominated for Best Film. Roger Ebert thought that it should have won both.
I recently watched this film again -- snagged the DVD by NetFlicks -- and watched it over and over again. Even though I had not seen it in decades, it is a powerful political statement about the Greek counter-revolution in the 60's. It is basically framed as an investigational procedural, but with incredible national repercussions.
The cast is astounding. The pace of the film builds to a frenetic finale. It is brilliant film making and an awesome political statement. I have not seen a better example including the other films mentioned here, "Thirteen Days" and "All the President's Men", both of which are also good. But "Z" leaves those in the dust.
Here's the Wiki: Z.
The absolutely consummate political film.
on edit, trailer, sorry, no subtitles on the trailer:
BTW, filmed in Algeria, French actors (except Greek Irene Pappas), dialog is French.
One of the best of the best.
