I've never known a rightwinger who wasn't affected by imagery, fakery, slogans and popular buzzwords. Toss in some patriotic word salad, add a dash of racism, a smidgen of bigotry, turn up the jingoistic martial music, and watch the tribalism unfold.

Flag etiquette is not even a factor. Over the checkered course of history it has stood as both the representative icon for our extraordinary accomplishments and appalling regrets. For good or evil, the flag is a representation, symbol of a powerful moment of protest.

It is "unAmerican" NOT to defend the right of anyone to exercise their Constitutional right to freely denounce government policies. People have the right to protest the actions of a government they strongly disagree with. Whether it's in the form of waving the iconic emblems that represent it, or defacing them, it is all protected speech.
