8. don't understand

Why was Obama so late in coming out in favor of gay marriage? Is this a political move for him and is it a good idea? In the past the belief was while the base would be overjoyed at his publicly coming out for GM it would hurt him badly among Independents, a group without which he cannot win (neither candidate can win without carrying the Ind voters).

Was he forced by Biden's statement of a few days ago?

Many seem to believe his statement has some force of law, which of course it does not. So how and with what groups does this help him in the election?
