A Utah mom and her boyfriend beat her 2-year-old son to death and smeared his dirty diaper in his face over a potty training accident, police said.

Jasmine Bridgeman and Joshua Schoenenberger are in custody and charged with felony child abuse, KTVX reported.

Little James Sieger Jr. died Monday, two days after the alleged Saturday beating inside his Layton home, police said.

The 23-year-old mother told cops that her 34-year-old boyfriend got upset when James, nicked-named JJ, soiled his diaper instead of using the toilet, according to court documents.

She told investigators that Schoenenberger "smeared the poop from the diaper in (toddler's) face."

Bridgeman went outside to smoke a cigarette. When she came back, JJ and Schoenenberger were in the bathroom alone together, and the mom heard her boy crying, she told police.

The mother and boyfriend took the child to the hospital claiming the boy "nearly drowned." But the hospital notified the police as the injuries indicated a beating and not a drowning. Several surgeries were attempted, but the boy eventually died.

The mother and boyfriend were both arrested and face homicide and child abuse charges.
