(7,908 posts)74. I'm no expert on Paine, but I do seem to recall he was one of the
few "revolutionists" who was an outright abolitionist, when abolitionism was the fringiest of fringe ideas, kind of like women's 'right to vote' ca. 1815. So no surprise if two of Paine's mourners were African American freedmen.
