As we all know, or should know, the blacks and Hispanics are a large part of the Democrat constituency. Both of these groups are very heavily ANTI gay and anti gay marriage. I believe the president may have alienated a whole lot of people in areas where he cannot afford to lose votes.

Keep in mind most of the swing States have already passed laws against gays getting married and the citizens of these States were strongly for these laws despite having gone for Obama last election. Obama does not have the luxury this time of giving up any votes and it seems he has alienated a large part of his followers in order to satisfy what most agree is a very small part of the population. This issue, despite how the Left in generally feel about it is far down on the list of what voters feel is important today and may well be viewed as a deliberate distraction by the president.

Personally I believe his hand was forced by Biden's statement a few days ago and this was something he definitely did not want to deal with now.
