Help the JEWEL program provide critical education, supplies, and treatment to ensure the health and well-being of elephants in Jaipur!

In Jaipur, Rajasthan, 130 elephants spend their days transporting tourists in the Indian desert heat. Coupled with people and supplies, they travel 7 miles up a hill to the ancient fort of Amer and back, multiple times a day. Unfortunately, elephant owners and mahouts are ill-equipped to provide proper nutrition due to a lack of education and financial resources. Overworked and undernourished, elephants in this region have faced an array of medical issues. These medical problems were left untreated until Humane Society International’s JEWEL Program was created to improve the welfare and quality of life for Elephants in Jaipur.

Since the program began in 2013, the JEWEL program has made remarkable progress. They are the only non-profit program on the ground helping these amazing animals. Veterinarians and staff travel to villages throughout the desert region using fully equipped mobile medical vans. Staff members treat elephants for any injuries or wounds on-site. Elephants are also given proper nutritional supplements to ensure their long-term health. Finally, elephant owners and mahouts are educated on how to properly care for elephants in need.
