Sanders to offer free Ben & Jerry's at formal campaign kickoff [View all]
Sen. Bernie Sanders will formally kick off his presidential campaign next week in a quintessentially Vermont way.
Sanders, the Vermont independent who announced last month he was seeking the Democratic nomination, will offer up free ice cream from Ben & Jerrys, the company founded in Vermont by liberal entrepreneurs. Mango Jam, an unlikely Vermont-based Zydeco/Cajun band, will entertain people at the 5 p.m. event on Tuesday along the shores of Lake Champlain in Burlingtons Waterfront Park.
My hometown of Burlington and the people of Vermont have a special place in my heart, said Sanders, who served as mayor of the politically progressive city before being elected to Congress. There is nowhere else in the world where I would hold an event this important.
Sanders may need the event to provide him with some hometown comfort before he heads to the more conservative, neighboring state of New Hampshire on Wednesday to campaign. That trip will be followed by one to Iowa on Thursday.
